Mobile Security: The 4 Places You’ve Probably Already Left Your Phone
As attached as we’ve become to our electronics, we all leave our phones and tablets behind from time to time. Here are four places to be extra vigilant when it comes to making sure your devices stay out of the hands of thieves.
Coffee Shops, Restaurants and Bars
Whether you’re at your favorite watering hole during happy hour, enjoying an espresso on the weekend or catching up with a friend at your favorite restaurant, it’s likely your smartphone or tablet joins the conversation at some point. You might be showing off your favorite new cat video or checking it to share your location. Whatever the case, resist the urge to leave it out on the table or on the bar while you chat. Check notifications and then immediately return your phone to your pocket. Ladies: avoid leaving devices in purses that hang off to the side. A sly pickpocket might not be able to resist the temptation.
Taxis and Buses
Who hasn’t had their phone slip out of their back pocket when riding in the back of a taxi after a long night out? Your driver might be nice and report it stolen, but it’s better to avoid the whole ordeal altogether. Make sure you check all of your pockets before you step out of a cab. On buses (and underground trains), it’s always a good idea to keep your belongings close to you at all times. You never know when a pickpocket may be near, waiting for the opportune moment to make away with your phone and the valuable information inside of it.
Bathrooms
Did you know 75% of smartphone users use their smartphones while going to the bathroom? Nature’s call isn’t the only thing people are answering when they’re in the restroom. This is another place where it’s smart to be a bit wary with your phone. Getting too distracted might mean leaving your device on the sink while you wash your hands. Even worse, too much multitasking can leave you fumbling while your phone goes for a swim in the worst possible place!
The Office
Smartphones and tablets are just as likely to be used as work tools as they are to be used for your personal life. It’s no wonder so many of us find ourselves walking through the door to our homes after a long day of work only to discover our phones are not where we expect them to be. Always check your pockets when you leave the office to make sure you’re not leaving any precious assets behind.
Keeping an eye out for your devices in any setting is always smart. But when you enter these spaces, make sure to be even more alert to the potential of losing your phone. You’ll save money by not having to replace expensive electronics, and most importantly, you’ll keep your information safe!
